  • Do not copy dimensions without measuring the doors. Test-fit a single flute first.
  • Do not fasten legs into hollow-core panels. This adaptation retains the original base and requires suitable anti-tip anchoring.
  • Check every door swing before gluing flutes near hinges.

Step by step

Preparation

  1. 01Watch the original video. This adaptation uses a horizontal 2×4 KALLAX with eight door inserts and leaves the frame intact.
  2. 02Assemble following IKEA instructions. Measure each front and its opening clearance; record height, width and thickness. The 330 mm value is only an estimate.

Cutting

  1. 03Cut one flute to the measured height, sand and test the door swing. Set the stop block only after this trial.
  2. 04Cut remaining flutes in door-sized batches. Allow about 27 flutes per 330 mm front; adjust quantity to usable width and purchased profile.

Assembly

  1. 05Remove doors, clean and prepare surfaces to the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions. Make a bond test and observe cure time.
  2. 06Dry-lay flutes from the centre outwards, maintaining clearances. Clamp with a flat protective caul without warping doors.

Finishing

  1. 07Sand ends and apply primer and thin paint coats. Keep buildup away from hinges.
  2. 08Refit doors, adjust hinges and anchor the unit to the wall with suitable fixings. Check the manual before adding loads.
